Sue
PREP & KINDY CLASSROOM ASSISTANT
What is your background?
I grew up in Ballarat, Victoria and moved to Byron Bay in 1995, after living in many parts of Australia and also in London for three years. Before I started working at BCPS full time ten years ago, I was a florist for 22 years.
What do you remember best about primary school?
I was born into a big family of ten children so I was lucky enough, at primary school, to have a brother or sister in every class above me when I started. It really helped me feel secure at school and gave me a real sense of community.
What qualifications do you have?
I have a Certificate lll in Education Support and Special Needs.
What are your main philosophies about children’s learning?
I work in the Prep/Kindy class, so it’s all about play-based learning for me. I want the kids to feel safe, have fun and then they are ready to learn. I love the creativity of little ones and enjoy exploring where that takes us in flexible learning environments.
Why do you enjoy working at BCPS?
I think the school culture allows both staff and students to be creative, relaxed and express themselves and that's a win for me.
What is your greatest achievement?
I’m a proud mum, so it would have to be my son and my niece who I care for.
What aspirations still lie ahead?
I look forward to watching my family grow and hope to explore more parts of the world one day.
What occupies your time outside of school hours?
I live in Byron Bay, so I like spending time at the beaches, swimming, walking our dog, riding my bike, watching movies and catching up with family and friends.
If you weren’t a Teacher’s Assistant, how do you think you would be spending your days?
I’m not sure, probably something creative or in the community sector helping people somehow...doing something with a purpose.
